John Fisher was a man who practised innovation but also believed in the significance of traditional values. As Chancellor of early 16th Century Cambridge University he was acclaimed for improving its curriculum. He also distinguished himself as a man of the poor and a defender of the Catholic faith during his thirty years as Bishop of Rochester in England. He was executed in 1535 for opposing Henry VIII's marriage plans.
In 1935 John Fisher was proclaimed a saint.
St John Fisher College welcomed its first students in 1981. Inspired by St John Fisher's scholarly and social work, the College founders envisioned a place where young women could learn about the world and their special places in it through a flexible and evolving curriculum. This learning would be supported and reflected in spiritual growth through Christian values in the Catholic tradition.
Every year, these goals are achieved and recognised in the confidence with which St John Fisher College students assume their responsibilities as optimistic members of society.
